Roberto Fregosi was born in Novara in 1958. After the school certificate at the Artistic High school, he attended academy circles in Venice.
He specilized abroad and began to exhibit his works in the 80s. Actually there are 250 exhibitions all over the world.
The president of Italian Republic awarded him “Commander of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic”.
Roberto Fregosi, in his twenties, came to art after attending the high school for Art in Italy and after specializing abroad.
His academic-professional education is undoubtedly perceived in his works, even if he re-elaborated his experiences (adding new and innovative forms of expressive and technical experimentation) and he certainly displayed a distinct and indipendent personality.
Attentive to the trends developed in the 70s on the international scene, he made them his own according to an esthetic sin tax outside the limits of any preord a ined school.
Two souls coexist in himself: the idyllic one, dreamy and lyrical which projects essential naturalistic cues in a world of refined chromatic balances, and the other one, tormented and tense, which discovers and wants to convey a tangible image to the eternal tragedies of existence, to evil and pain which man has to face con tinuously, and that represents the urgent enigma of life.
On one side, the essentia l landscapes were born (as a tribute of a young European to the great Oriental culture), which exalt the inevitable corruptibility of every vital essence in the timeless brightness of light and in the mystic accuracy of geometry. On the other side, dramatic and emblematic images of religious an cestry took shape (Christ, The Archangel, The Explusion from Eden) in which the violence of the deformity of the sign and of the chromatic weaving expresses an un resolved antinomy between Good and Evil, between Being and Nothing.
Fregosi’s painting (that positively distinguishes him from most of Lhe young neo-expressionist artists in the last decades) is not a sheer sign of protest, a pictoria l scream; on the contrary, his production is always characterized by a moral tension and a bitter complaint of the contradictions in which the contemporary man struggles.
A symbolic inspiration can be found in the artist, a talent which plunges its roots in Art history, in which he found a source to gain the noble dexterity of artistic work (using natural raw materials to manufacture colours, together with modem ones: from metal to gold). This young artist is characterized by a formal experi men talism and a deep moral tension which are his winning cards.

Roberto Fregosi has an ancient soul. I believe I’m not mistaken when I remind that anyone on Earth does not behave casually. It is a concept that has nothing rational, nevertheless I sometimes wonder what lives inside our personal subconscious that makes us think, produce, and act according to the rules which plunge their roots in a past “beyond”. Does the same common moral, which drives our behaviours, not have relevance with the inner human anguish which draws on the Biblical Epic?
Therefore the religiosity expressed through Roberto Fregosi’s icon tastes, in my opinion, not merely visually but also spiritually.
He moves indeed, as an ancient master of the fourteen th century in his own Novara. He works quietly, in a noisy secular world. He brings on the earthly stage the presence of the Sacred, wholly aware that his action, which joins art and poetry to craftsmanship, is apparently a gesture of inevitable defense, however, successful in long times.
The visual experimentation of Fregosi is, first of all, addressed to “memory”. Which? A memory of a lost spirituality, in this era of ours, where every visual writing, which surrounds the collective, is a writing – I would say- a pagan writing, from advertising to TV, to the last sacred monster called Internet.
It’s, at least, a curious event, that there is a contemporary painter, Roberto Fregosi, who from a provincial Italian city devoted himself, with aristocratic and solitary attitude, to the visual memory of “Virgin Mary”, of “Maternity”, especially in the “manner of the ancients”.
In this way Roberto Fregosi goes upstream, not because of a controversial spirit against his contemporary colleagues, but in order to bring to light a kind of message. A message of gratitude. A way and an impulse of his own creation with a double meaning :”knowing again” an d emerging from the inner darkness.”
It is perceived in the works of th is poet from Nova ra the need to express himself in an essential way, precisely like the primitive masters of the early Middle Ages who enriched the contours with precious elements. A tribute to sacredness. It is perceived in Roberto Fregosi’s aesthetic achievements the ancient Western culture, the mystical and, at the same time, aesthetic one of gold backgrounds and that of Russian icons. It’s, on the contrary, a mistake to compare his works with the Austrian secessionist taste of Gustav Klimt.
Roberto Fregosi, in fact, has nothing to do with the artist of modem art, his problematics quite another. It’s to remember in order to preserve. It’s to paint so as to return to prayer. ln these works everyone can identify himself. These are compositions that carry a simple message, because the hearts of the Virgin and of the Baby have the morning whiteness.”
What distinguishes the works of Roberto Fregosi, however, from the works of the past is a kind of inner restlessness.
He, indeed, doesn’t mock the past He starts with the humility of the mystical message to introduce a personal sign that has nothing presumptuous and pretentious. On the contrary, Roberto Fregosi prefers a slight sign, apparently insecure, compa red to the copyst’s trap.
He doesn’t copy, but he redraws his own memory of the ancient sacred image. He has created in these years a complex constituent touch, which brings him to combine, in every work, art and poetry to craftsmanship.”
So he is a contemporary artist with an ancient heart. No work is ever repetitive, but it starts from an idea that becomes sign, it creates its alchemy from which subjects such as the Virgin with the Baby or the Unicorn come to the fore.
He explains: “my colours are obtained with fire. I step on them three times.”
Not only. The painting, wisely, has its own glow, because it’s vetrified. I t takes severa l months of industry. Like the ancient masters, Roberto Fregosi paints with egg tempera. His system is compared to the goldsmith’s. He sets the “diamonds” and beats them one after the other with Carthusian patience, indeed. The decoration, obviously, does not end here. He abounds with gold and gold, with a succession of golden threads. The observer meets the writing of thousands of welds.
Roberto Fregosi made large works – even thirty metres wide panels – meditation paintings and chamber paintings. He should be thanked for his courage, his patience, and most of all for his love for the ancient past. His industriousness, which considers the sacred, it is linked closely to Love. A message that the artist’s audience can find in every composition, where the presence of gold is indeed nothing but the symbol of light.
